Understanding a Pandemic
Our young scientists at Performance Learning get a chance to apply their problem-solving skills in a classroom simulation on the spread of viruses and germs. Several substances are placed in dishes and drops are shared with different dishes (the people in a community). Some people are infected, and some are not (the clear fluid turns pink). Students then calculate how many infections will occur in the classroom and they write up lab reports on their findings.
Note that the scientists have their safety glasses on and the lead has on her STEM lab coat!
The students then read the young adult novel “Fever 1793” by Laurie Halse Anderson.
In 1793 Philadelphia, sixteen-year-old Matilda Cook, separated from her sick mother, learns about perseverance and self-reliance when she is forced to cope with the horrors of a yellow fever epidemic.
